SOCAR opens first fast-charging station for electric trucks on A1 motorway

On 15 May 2025, SOCAR Energy Switzerland opened the first fast-charging station for electric trucks at the Kölliken Nord service area on the A1 motorway. This new charging station marks a milestone in the development of high-performance infrastructure for heavy-duty electric vehicles.

Among the attendees at the official opening event were the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Fuad Isgandarov, National Council member Benjamin Giezendanner, representing the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), Guido Biaggio, Deputy Director of the Federal Roads Office, Stephan Attiger, member of the Cantonal Council of Aargau, Mirjam Bossard, Vice President of Kölliken Municipal Council, and the SOCAR Executive Board.

In brief statements, Matthias Eisenhauer, Director Retail at SOCAR Energy Switzerland, and National Council member Giezendanner emphasised the importance of efficient fast-charging solutions for sustainable logistics and their role in achieving climate targets. Guido Biaggio spoke about the next steps in the development of sustainable heavy-duty goods traffic, while Stephan Attiger stressed the importance of a stable power grid.

In the subsequent panel discussion, it became clear that speed, certainty in terms of planning and coordinated implementation are central factors for the success of e-mobility in heavy-duty goods traffic. Representatives from the political sphere, public administration and the energy sector emphasised that only a reliable combination of infrastructure, grid stability and economic conditions will create the confidence needed for investments in a climate-friendly transport future – and that the fast-charging station at Kölliken Nord is a tangible and necessary step towards e-mobility that is suitable for everyday use in heavy-duty goods traffic.

Pioneering location for e-mobility in heavy-duty goods traffic
The new fast-charging station at Kölliken Nord is specifically designed to meet the needs of electrified heavy-duty goods traffic. Located on Switzerland’s busiest transit route, it has a charging capacity of up to 400 kW, enabling exceptionally quick charging times – even for batteries with high capacities. Liquid-cooled high-performance cables ensure maximum efficiency and operational safety. Given its proximity to central logistics axes, the location is ideal for scheduling top-up charging on regional and national freight routes.

Helping to ensure an emission-free transport future
By opening a charging station in Kölliken, SOCAR is making a tangible contribution to the decarbonisation of heavy-duty goods traffic. This investment is part of a nationwide programme aimed at establishing a dense network of high-performance charging points for heavy-duty electric vehicles. The goal is to actively support the transition to a climate-friendly transport infrastructure offering practical solutions.

As Ralf Schilken, Head of Energy Transition at SOCAR Energy Switzerland, explained: “Electric mobility has also become a reality in heavy-duty goods traffic. The Kölliken site sets a clear example; it shows how we are embracing technological responsibility and demonstrates our corporate policy. Our fast-charging station is a building block for the emission-free logistics of the future.”

SOCAR is aiming to significantly expand its network of fast-charging stations by the end of 2026. The plan is to establish a total of around 100 high-performance fast-charging stations for cars and trucks in Switzerland, particularly at other key locations along the main transit and logistics routes. In addition to this, SOCAR intends to play an active role in the decarbonisation of heavy-duty goods traffic beyond this time frame – by working closely with partners and developing practical solutions for the mobility of tomorrow.
